Joint Universities Research Archive

JULAC established a task force in 2002 to consider the feasibility of a central storage facility for shared access by all JULAC members. Libraries have insufficient space to store research materials which are no longer in high or immediate demand, but are still of high research value. The UGC considers the proposed JURA project a worthwhile initiative and has given support for the JURA. JURA will use state of the art ARS (automatic retrieval system) technology to store and retrieve 8.4 million volumes. The expected completion date for the facility is 2017. The University of Hong Kong is the agreed lead institution for the JURA project.

JURA was established

  1. To consider the feasibility of a central storage facility for shared access by all JULAC members;
  2. To propose pooling and storing research materials at an off-campus joint universities research archive facility;
  3. To provide a long term solution to the research materials storage problems faced by the JULAC libraries.
The JURA Working Group (JWG) is responsible for the management of the library specific tasks to prepare and deliver the JURA collection for JURA storage; development of procedures, work tools and methods required for JURA’s operations; and will help the JURA Project Committee (JPC) see the project through to its conclusion.
