JULAC Libraries Forum 2013 – Programme

This presentation will report on the latest development of the JULAC Common Card Project which was approved by JULAC in its meeting in March 2013. It is a continuing initiative of several previous attempts to replace the paper-based JULAC Library Card and to streamline the card application and registration workflow. A Task Force consisting access services and systems colleagues was established to oversee the implementation. A new form of plastic card with common barcode will replace the existing paper card; and an onsite registration system will be implemented to facilitate the transmit of patron record electronically to the host library during registration.

A Consortiall Joint PDA eBooks Taskforce was formed to investigate different PDA models and to identify the possible benefits and problems of a joint PDA e-book consortium for JULAC libraries. Currently, HKU, HKBU, LU, HKUST, PolyU and CUHK are libraries participating in the PDA/DDA ebook acquisitions on individual basis, not as a joint shared access ePDA model. The presentation will focus on why JULAC is looking at shared PDA for eBooks, and how JULAC libraries might adopt a proposed model to benefit all JULAC libraries.

This presentation will give an update on the JULAC Copyright Committee’s work in the past year. It will cover the negotiation with HKRRLS for course pack licensing for 2013-2014. It will outline the development of procedures relating to Copyright and the RAE 2014 Exercise. It will also take a brief look at some other copyright issues that may be coming up: data sharing, MOOCs, etc.

In late 2011, reference librarians from Lingnan University and HKBU worked to set up a joint chat reference service. While it took time for those involved to become comfortable answering questions from another institution, the service has now reached a point where the partnership can be leveraged to achieve greater efficiencies without sacrificing service quality. This presentation will give an overview of the technology and service models used and an analysis of how well the service has been received by our users.

In order to cater for users’ increasing information needs as a result of the changes in educational design and delivery in recent years, a student rover service was initiated at the Pao Yue-kong Library of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University at the beginning of the academic year 2012/13. The aim of the student rover service is to improve user service by providing peer-to-peer and point of need information assistance regardless of where users are located in the Library.This presentation will share with the audience our Library’s experience on the development and running of the service.

With reference to ISO 11620:2008 Information and documentation – library performance indicators, data collected annually by JULAC will be categorized, analyzed and benchmarked.  The Committee will explore how we can make use of the figures to understand better the background and current trends of library services among JULAC Libraries, and how they can help us to plan more effectively for our future development

New pedagogies, such as flipped classrooms, have avidly engaged the students in the learning processes by inverting the traditional teaching methods. CityU implemented these new pedagogies by deploying suitable e-Learning tools through different channels such as Library, DEC labs, etc. The group study rooms of Humanities Academy where collaborative learning and presentation are the popular activities of students are selected to be equipped with the e-learning tools. The award winning Chinese Medicine (CM) Digital Project aims to support teaching & learning, and promote open access of CM resources to the world. The project was developed by the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Library in close collaboration with the CM faculty members to integrate knowledge and expertise of the multidisciplinary team. The project contains a series of CM related subject databases. The innovative digital service enhanced the teaching pedagogy and provided more flexibility to instructors and students, was highly appraised and used by HKBU community and beyond.

The PolyU Library has developed a Primo-Blackboard Connector to facilitate easy export of searched items from the Library’s OneSearch discovery platform to Blackboard. The search items can be printed books, e-books, audiovisual materials, journal articles and more. Users can view their OneSearch records as well as full text, if available, through the hyperlinks. The Connector mechanism is also applied to the Library’s Course Reading website, allowing faculties to export all or selected titles from particular course reading lists to Blackboard. In this presentation, we will highlight the implementations, the lessons learned and the further development of the Connector.

Lingnan University Library became the first library in Asia to implement the new Sierra Services Platform when we upgraded our library system to Sierra from the Millennium ILS in July 2013. This presentation will give a detail account of Lingnan’s path to Sierra by discussing our plan, journey, and eventual arrival to the successful migration. The enhancements brought by Sierra to our workflow management and system administration will also be discussed.

The new 2,500 sq. m Learning Garden of CUHK University Library opened 24/7 in November 2012. The Learning Garden is equipped with modern learning facilities that facilitate individual and collaborative study. These 24/7 facilities are widely welcomed by students. Nearly 500 users are found staying during peak hours, and amazingly, an average of over 2,700 canned drinks sold per month. The presentation shares the challenges in the first year of operations and the way forward in sustaining the Learning Garden as a welcoming space for students to enjoy the funs of learning and sharing throughout their student journeys at CUHK.

HKIEd’s Tseung Kwan O Study Centre (TKOSC) opened in 2012 is an off-campus study and teaching facility supporting part-time programmes and sub-degree programmes of the Institute.  In this presentation, HKIEd Library will share their experience in providing library and information services at an off-campus site with limited space and absence of full-time permanent staff.

In the past year, HKUST Library’s E-Learning Team created more than 30 e-learning objects as part of its information literacy teaching and learning effort. These objects were mainly short videos on how to use databases, library facilities and equipment, and citation styles. A few had interactive elements, such as games and quizzes. This presentation will share our stories: the opportunities we seized, the challenges we faced, and the joy we got out of creating e-learning objects that engage students.

Libraries are going through the transformation from a place of collection to connection. Upon relocating to its new premises in early 2013, the Education Library at the University of Hong Kong has embarked on a “shared learning space” to stay in closer-than-ever proximity with the Faculty of Education. This presentation will introduce the background for the shared learning space at the Education Library, the challenges and advantages in the making of such shared space, as well as the user experience towards this renewed collaboration.
