 In addition to
recent activities on collaborative collection development efforts, JULAC member libraries
have developed other resource sharing programs. While most of the projects have the full
participation of all eight JULAC libraries, some may involve a self-selected subgroup
because of their common areas of interest, programmatic needs and other considerations.
Inter Library Loan and Access Program
To expedite resource sharing through interlibrary loan, JULAC
implemented a document delivery program in 1992 by contracting with DHL for daily pick-up
and delivery of library materials (Monday to Friday) among the JULAC member libraries.
In addition, the academic staff and higher degree students of
JULAC member libraries may apply for on-site use and borrowing of materials from another
member library through the JULAC card program.
Shared Cataloging of Chinese Language Materials
Project
JULAC formed a Co-Operative Cataloguing Chinese Materials
Task Force in 1993 to study the feasibility of establishing a resource database of CNMARC,
CMARC, LC CJK MARC and a mechanism for sharing cataloguing data of Chinese language
materials among UGC member libraries. With funding support from the UGC and the University
of Hong Kong serving as host site for the project, the Innovative Interfaces, Inc. was
subsequently contracted to develop Z39.50 client/server software to allow remote retrieval
and import of records among UGC member libraries.
Hong Kong Chinese Authority Name (HKCAN) Project
This project,
spearheaded by Lingnan University, has seven JULAC libraries participated to establish a union database with the purpose of facilitating more efficient Chinese name authority control. The database currently has more than 160,000 authority records and is expected to grow steadily at about 20,000 yearly. The HKCAN data can also be viewed via OCLC Connexion.
Jointly Sponsored Seminars, Workshops and
Conferences by UGC Member Libraries
A JULAC seminar on "Electronic Resources - Consortial
Initiatives" was held on 11 May 2001. Invited speakers were Diane Costello
(Australia), Arnold Hirshorn (USA) and Ian Mowat (UK).
In addition to the seminars, workshops, and conferences
organized by individual JULAC member libraries, JULAC occasionally offers similar programs
in co-sponsorship with other professional groups such as the Hong Kong Library Association
as a means of enhancing the learning environment for the library information community.
